Review
Balloons & Buoyancy is a physics and chemistry simulation tool. It of course deals with buoyancy. In this particular simulation, balloons are used to recreate conditions that influence an object buoyancy. In lay terms, buoyancy is an object's ability to float. An object can float not only on water, but on other liquids and even gases as well, as it is in the case of helium balloons.
This simulation is made up of a container and different types of balloons. In the first example, there is a hot air balloon trapped in the container. You can make the container bigger or smaller and control the gravity and temperature inside of it. You can also add two types of gases to the container and observe how they interact with each other and with the balloon. Other examples let you use a rigid hollow sphere, in which you can add gases, and a helium balloon. You can experiment in the same fashion with any of those objects.
Ideally, you would use this application to determine what conditions make an object buoyant. But there are measurement tools that can be used for a variety of interesting things. I have noticed that Balloons & Buoyancy is highly technical and the reason is that perhaps buoyancy is a rather complicated subject for those of us who are not sophisticated in science. Still, the application is well designed and is easy to use, provided you know what you want. |
- Built-in help about the interface.
- Complete simulation.
- Different objects available.
- Measurement tools.
